C’EST LE DÉBUT DE LA FIN POUR LE CANCER TEL QUE NOUS LE CONNAISSONS.

Les plus grands chercheurs canadiens en oncologie saluent le début d’un âge d’or pour la recherche et appellent à l’accélération de la collaboration entre les médecins, les chercheurs et les philanthropes, au bénéfice de tous les patients atteints de cancer.

La semaine dernière, environ 300 chercheurs en oncologie, cliniciens et patients de tout le pays se sont réunis à Toronto pour la 10e rencontre scientifique de l’Institut de recherche Terry Fox. C’était l’occasion de présenter des recherches novatrices et de nouer des collaborations au profit des patients atteints de cancer.

Notre groupe est convaincu que nous entrons dans un âge d’or de la recherche sur le cancer. Nous disposons maintenant de puissants outils — dont l’intelligence artificielle et l’apprentissage machine, sans compter les remarquables percées dans le domaine de l’imagerie et du séquençage génomique — qui permettent de générer et d’étudier de grandes quantités de données et de trouver des avenues pour nous attaquer aux quelque 200 maladies que nous appelons collectivement « cancer ».

Au cours des deux dernières décennies, l’Institut de recherche Terry Fox a créé un écosystème de collaboration permettant de valider ces technologies et de générer de nouveaux types de données qui seront étudiées par les plus grands scientifiques du pays. Le Réseau des centres d’oncologie du Marathon de l’espoir (MOHCCN) accélère le déploiement de ces outils et données afin d’améliorer les résultats des soins et la qualité de vie des patients. Cette initiative pancanadienne sans précédent permet de mettre les ressources en commun, d’étudier les idées nouvelles et d’exploiter les résultats des recherches afin que la détection, le diagnostic et le traitement du cancer soient plus exacts et précis.

Ces collaborations révolutionnaires font entrevoir un avenir où tous les patients atteints de cancer au Canada, où qu’ils habitent, pourront recevoir le traitement idéal au moment idéal, selon le cancer particulier qui les touche. 

L’objectif est ambitieux. La voie à suivre est claire. Il y a urgence.
